Schaar's Bluff Gathering Center

Picture 19
Designed by one of Kelsey's favorite architecture/interior design firms here in the Twin Cities (MS&R), the Gathering Center is both a beautiful testiment to modern architecture as well as being a truly living building.

  • Nearly all of the building’s annual electricity needs are powered by a nearby wind turbine. (Any excess power is sent to the electrical grid.)
  • The building is designed to control heat gains/losses by using super insulation techniques, automated and fixed shading devices, and sensor-controlled light and heat.
  • Rainwater captured on the roof is used to flush toilets and is then treated in an on-site septic system before recharging the aquifer.
  • A trellis with fruit-bearing vines runs alongside the building, sustains wildlife and provides shade on the building during the warm months.
  • Construction materials consist of locally harvested woods from certified sustainable forests.

Designed to pay homage to the beautiful bluff on which it sits, the Gathering Center delights its visitors with a vast circular great room, floor-to-ceiling windows, and sweeping lines.  With both an informal outdoor space, which I have dubbed the sun-harvesting scoop porch, and a more formal terrace on the side, the building truly flows from the interior to the exterior, but still feels whole.
